Description

Imipenem acts as an inhibitor of and is an antibiotic useful for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections.

Targets

AmpC β-lactamase ^[1]

In vitro

Imipenem, a β-lactam antibiotic, binds to penicillin binding protein 2 with the highest affinity and produces rounded cells. The binding of imipenem causes cells to lyse quickly and thereby to release less free endotoxin.

In vivo

Imipenem has a very short half-life. Imipenem has antimycobacterial activity both in a mouse model and in humans at high risk for failure of treatment for MDR (multiple-drug-resistant) tuberculosis.
