Description

Adefovir is an orally administered nucleotide analog inhibitor used for treatment of hepatitis B and herpes simplex virus infection.

In vitro

In vitro, adefovir is a potent inhibitor of viral replication in human hepatoma cell lines stably transfected with HBV and in primary duck hepatocytes infected with duck HBV (DHBV). Adefovir does not prevent initiation of infection in primary duck hepatocyte cultures. Adefovir is also reported to exhibit immunomodulatory effects, including stimulation of natural killer cell activity and interferon alpha production.

In vivo

Adefovir has a poor oral bioavailability and it is usually used via intraperitoneal injection.
