Lipoic acid, or thioctic acid, is a significant bioactive molecule involved in various biological processes. When functionalized with polyethylene glycol (PEG), lipoic acid can bind to metallic particles or film surfaces through its -S-S- bond.

The lipoic acid group exhibits a high affinity for metallic surfaces, making it widely utilized in binding to surfaces such as gold nanoparticles and quantum dots.
